As two kooks, one the leader of the "free world" and the other the leader of an "unfree world" futz around on the brink of nuclear war, we must remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To remember should be linked to never again...but unfortunately the horrors of a nuclear holocaust remain possible.
The leaders of the US during WWII made a decision to drop atomic bombs on civilian population centers knowing that their decision would murder non-combatants...women, children. The expressed reason for their choice was that it would save American lives by ending the war sooner. The war did most likely end sooner but were American lives really saved and were the expressed reasons disingenuous? Could the US have accepted a conditional peace plan offered by the Japanese? The Allies could have maintained an embargo which would have led to surrender. Could the US have shown the terrible power of its new weapon by dropping it on a relatively uninhabited location, perhaps a sacred symbol of Japan such as Mount Fuji? After all, the Japanese did not know how many atomic bombs were in the American arsenal. But then was the purpose of unleashing the atomic bombs on Japan actually meant to bring an early end to the war? Or was the purpose a warning to Russia...we will not tolerate your aggression and have the destructive power to destroy you? A warning killing tens of thousands of Japanese civilians as well as American POWs.
Today, North Korea threatens civilian population centers and the US does the same. Two kooks may bring our nations to the horror of thermonuclear war. Neither, I believe, fully understand the worldwide devastation that could/would occur even from attacks limited to their countries. The US "advanced" warfare against civilians by using nukes...we must find an alternative!
If President Trump wishes to be remembered as a hero, to show some courage, he could go to North Korea along with the heads of neighboring states with mutual concern and interest. He could use his "legendary negotiation skills" with Kim Jong-Un in order to end the current threat of nuclear war. Kook to kook may seem kookie, but then????
